Vision Boards: Using Imagination and Values

January is a stirring month because it is the first month of the New Year (yay 2019!), and it signifies the end of a past year. (bye-bye 2018). January is the month of new things and imagining what you'd like for yourself in the coming year. :D

Why Resolutions Often Fail

It is common for people to make goals or resolutions over the holidays.... only to have them fall short in January, as it can often be challenging to "get back into the swing of things" AND do much more than you were before the holidays. There are grand plans for gym memberships, healthy eating, and yoga classes; however, many of these plans are started and then discarded, as life brings us it's usual ups and downs. We cannot plan for everything! Moreover, the weather and the short days can contribute to a sense of hopelessness.

Not everyone falls prey to this, of course, and yet many individuals who created goals for 2019 do not end up honoring those goals past January. Often we committ to things that we really don't want to do- and this does us a disservice. We invite you to imagine what you would REALLY LIKE your life to BE like in 2019.

Imagination and Values

Now, keep in mind all that you've imagined, and think of the VALUES behind it all. Why? Many people find that it is most helpful to choose and live their values (rather than choosing goals). For one, when we live our values, it brings more meaning and fulfillment to our lives. Secondly, it is EASIER to step valued steps rather than drag ourselves to complete our never-ending sets of goals.

When we lead a valued-focused life, we can take values-driven action that can ultimately help us achieve goals, yet it is most helpful to view our values as our "life compass," helping us chart the way in each moment, hour, day, week or month.

For example, if you have the "goal" to lose weight in 2019, ask yourself what is the value behind that goal? It could be healthy living. And now, what does "healthy-living" mean to you? Eating healthy, nutritious foods, leading an active lifestyle, getting adequate sleep, cutting down on caffeine? When we live the VALUE, we can take values-focused steps throughout our day. Before we know it, we are achieving and surpassing our goal because we are living our values; and values have much more positive intention and strong momentum than do goals!

Effective Vision Boards

Going back to the imagination piece, we invite you to be able to imagine what it will be like to live your values. What will it feel like? What will it look like? What will have changed in your life?

Each year, we encourage clients to make "vision boards" of what they would like in 2019- focusing not simply on the "goals" or material things that they would like, yet also on how they want to feel, what they'd like to be doing, and what values are important for them to live out in the coming year.

Vision boards can be powerful in that they provide us with a visual compass of where we are heading- place inside a closet door, so that it is both private, and so that you will see it everyday to remind yourself of your values, what you would like to create, and how you'd like to BE that very day!

By using your imagination to visualize how you will FEEL, you will be much more motivated to live your values and adhere to your plan or goal. Every good plan or goal must also have logical steps and have measurable outcomes; however, before that part of goal planning can be done it is important to spend time imagining what the outcome of your plan will be so that you know what it is you really want to plan for.

This is Your Year!

We believe January is the perfect time to start dreaming about how you want to BE in 2019. It is the month to let your imagination soar!
